Blue Hill peninsula, Maine

The best month is the one nobody books.

September the water is warmer than June, the crowds are gone and the light gets long and low. October brings the colour down the peninsula. If you can travel midweek, this is the month to do it.

Fourteen rooms and four shore cabins on a working peninsula, open late May to late October.

Every rate is published, from $195 a night. No search, no form, no waiting for a reply.

We came for two nights in October and rebooked from the front room before we left. The fog morning was the best part and we would not have believed that in advance.

Nell told us to go to the landing at five and stand by the fish house. We did. It made the trip.
