What to do when it is socked in

Fog is not a lost day here, it is the reason some people come back. The question guests actually ask, answered properly.

Boats at a harbour dock on a foggy day

Go to the water anyway

Fog on the Reach is not the same as fog inland. It sits on the channel and moves, so the ledge is often clear when the road is not. Walk down, sit for twenty minutes, watch a lobster boat appear at forty feet and disappear again. This is the thing people describe when they get home.

The good indoor hours are the early ones

Local galleries and the boatyard open late morning and close by four, and everybody has the same idea on a grey day. Go at opening. By one in the afternoon the parking is a problem and the rooms are full.

Eat early and stay in

The kitchen serves from six and we hold a table for anyone in the house who asks by four. On a fog day most guests end up in the front room with the stove going rather than driving twenty minutes for a reservation. That is a good evening, and it costs nothing.

If this is your kind of trip

A guide that does not lead anywhere is a blog post. These two do.
